Hello from the busy Placement Team!
This is the second Placement-Announcement for 2008. You are receiving this because we have received your questionnaire requesting placement, and have your camp in our database. If you meet all the criteria, we, the Placement Team, will work hard to give every camp placement as close to what they ask for as possible. Your questionnaire, layout plan and leave no trace plan will be our guide to your needs. Placed camps will be announced by early August.
These announcements help to answer frequently asked questions and give you and your camp-mates important information for this year's event. Please make sure to pass them along to your group.

ADDING EMAIL ADDRESSES TO THIS LIST
Communication and information-sharing is key to your camp's planning, so be proactive and add the email addresses of some of your key folks to this list. Send your additional email addresses to placement-announce-owner@burningman.com , and remember to include your camp's name in the email.
Note: these additional subscription-requests should come ONLY from the main contact-person who filed the placement questionnaire.
Last year some of the important early-arrival passes were kicked-back by the main contact's email address. Don't let this happen to you! Provide extra email addresses as insurance!

UPDATING YOUR MAIN-CONTACT INFORMATION
It's important that we have the most current information for the main contact-person of your camp. While working on this year's city layout, we often have questions or need clarification on something in your questionnaire. This could affect your camp's placement, so being able to reach someone is important.
If your phone number or email address is not current, you can update it by logging into http://forms.burningman.com and clicking on "my preferences".

ARE YOU AN ARTIST, CAMP AND/OR GEEK WHO BRINGS WIRELESS/'NET TECHNOLOGY TO THE PLAYA?
If you are planning a largescale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be
beaming any sort of bits and bytes into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate at the Burning Man Technology Department will be hosting our second Playa Wireless Summit at 7 pm on June 12, 2007. If you're not in the area, write to us for
info on how to dial in.
PLEASE RSVP and get more info by responding to this post at playatech@burningman.com. It would be great if you could give us a few details on your project.
When we say "technology", we don't mean just a laptop to check your email once during the week when you randomly hop on the Wifi cloud provided by the good folks at Internet at Burning Man. We're talking about the kind of geek who brings a whole car full of technology and towers and beams bits and bytes all over the playa and into the universe.
Well, from one geek to another... we all know that these bits and bytes that we are beaming all over the playa will play a lot nicer with each other -- and get to where they are supposed to be going -- if we all talk about what we are planning to do and work together ahead of time. Heck, we may even be able to help each other out a bit on our projects!
Please let us know the nature of your project, and feel free to get as geeky as you wannabe - we'll get it. You'll be invited to attend the Summit where we'll talk geek talk and compare the size of our towers and other fun things like that.
Once again, if you are bringing "heavy geekery" like repeaters and towers, or you have a project that MUST have an Internet connection, we need to hear from you.
Thanks!

WHAT?, WHERE?, WHEN? SUBMISSIONS
Q: Why where the locations for events not included in the 2007 What?, Where?, When? guide?
A: There was a mistake in the guide for the 2007 event and the locations and times of things were difficult to discern. We recognize the issue and will have it resolved for 2008.
Want Black Rock City to know about your wonderful parties, events and happenings? Get it into the What?Where? When booklet today! Just go to our on-line calendar, click on "Playa Events Calendar" and add your blurb on your day:
http://www.burningman.com/calendar/
DO NOT wait until you get your placement information. That won't be until early August. We will add your playa-address later, after we have finished mapping.

2007 MOOP MAP
MOOP is an acronym for Matter Out Of Place. Just about anything that isn't playa dust on the Black Rock desert is MOOP. As your camp's plans are gearing up for this year, we can't emphasize enough the importance of Leave-No-Trace planning. Were you at the event last year? How did your camp do? Check out this link:
"A picture is worth one-thousand words". The 2007 MOOP map has an great new feature, the "MOOP TRACKER". You can access the Tracker at the link above on the right side of your web browser screen. When you select the "Hotspots" or "Abandoned Stuff" links, a mouse-over of the glowing hot-spot icons will open a photograph of the MOOP items left behind. You'll see that big items were especially a problem last year: pieces of carpet and lumber.
We can all work at doing a better job. In general terms, many large camps have not adequately staffed their clean-up crews proportional to the size of their camp. Also, while many large camps do a great job cleaning their assigned camping space, they neglect the area occupied (and MOOP-ed up!) by their large "audience" during the event. As all Esplanade and Large Scale Sound Art camps at 2:00 and 10:00 have use of 100 feet of space in front of their camps for art installations and other uses, they are responsible for cleaning this area too.
Coming up with a committed daily Leave-No-Trace Plan NOW is as important as anything else you're planning. It's how we are allowed to return to the Black Rock Desert year after year.
Here are some good resources to help in your camp's planning:

http://www.mezziah.org/burningman/cleanup
This is really required reading for anyone going to Burning Man -- so please take a look. It can save you (and everyone else) a real headache once you're out on the playa.
Yes, the Placement Team always takes a camp's Leave-No-Trace past history into consideration when we do our placement planning!

BETTER LNT PLANS, PLEASE!
We have noticed a deficiency in some camp's Leave No Trace plans submitted. How do you know if your LNT submission is lacking? Please review the email summary of your questionnaire answers that we sent you. The Leave No Trace summary is at the very end. If you have just one to three lines, and have not identified your camp's Leave No Trace leader, well . . . as the DPW sometimes says (with tongue-in-cheek): "You're doing it wrong!"
Review the sample plans and send your more detailed plans to campplans@burningman.com, please! We wouldn't want to turn you away for placement because your LNT plan was too brief.
The good news is that there was a marked improvement in LNT efforts between 2006 and 2007, so returning camps should keep up the good work and be proud of your contribution to the largest Leave No Trace event on the planet!
. . . did you already submit your camp layout plan? All plans are due by May 31st.

BLACK ROCK CITY DESIGN: EXPANSION IN 2008
2008 Black Rock City Plan Changes. Did you feel the squeeze in 2007? Well there are some BIG changes to our city this year! Remove 2007’s three inner blocks — Esplanade through “C” — and you have our new Esplanade for 2008 (where Street “C” was last year). The distance from the Man to the Esplanade road is increasing from 2200 to 2700 feet. This will increase the length of the Esplanade 2500 feet over last year. Our 2008 streets after Esplanade run from “A” to “K”. So we’ve removed three shorter concentric inner runs of blocks from the inside, and added two very long concentric runs at the back of the city.
Center Camp Changes. Our Black Rock Ranger Headquarters, and main Medical Station have relocated to the Esplanade frontage of Center Camp, located approximately at 2:00 on the Center Camp circle. Look for larger interactive theme camps in Center Camp too this year, as the depth of Center Camp has doubled — now with an increased footprint into the Esplanade, and intersecting the 5:30 and 6:30 radial roads.
3:00 and 9:00 Plaza Changes. The Ranger Outposts and Medical Stations at the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas are moving this year. They are pulling back to be on “C” street just behind the plazas. We’ve adjusted the plazas to give these essential service locations continued high visibility.
(when the 2008 Map goes on-line, we'll let you know)

IT BEARS REPEATING: FROM ANNC #1 - CALL FOR CENTER CAMP PLACEMENT & PREPPING YOUR SMALL EARLY ARRIVAL CREWS
Is your camp ready to 'play the palace'? With the 2008 city expansion Center Camp can now hold larger camps. Interactive camps of 30-40 people with activities for all-ages are encouraged to write placement@burningman.com and request Center Camp placement.
What are you waiting for?
. . . and please start compiling a list of your essential setup crew NOW. Our early, limited city services cannot support a large population. We must limit early arrivals to those essential for construction and set up only. Before Monday, everyone on playa must be working, no exceptions. Make your list now and look for early arrival instructions and a call for those counts in future placement-announce newsletters.

YOUR LIST/YOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you have an announcement that you feel may be appropriate for this list, please email us at placement@burningman.com with a submission request. We are happy to make other camps aware of what you are up to and help to further a community of support.
