This is the third Placement-Announcement for 2008. You are receiving this because we have received your questionnaire requesting placement, and have your camp in our database. If you meet all the criteria, we, the Placement Team, will work hard to give every camp placement as close to what they ask for as possible. Your questionnaire, layout plan and leave no trace plan will be our guide to your needs. Placed camps will be announced by early August.
These announcements help to answer frequently asked questions and give you and your camp-mates important information for this year's event. Please make sure to pass them along to your group.
There were approximately 780 questionnaires filed requesting placement. Phweew! That's about 60 more than last year. Good thing our city plan is bigger this year.

WEB-SITE BLURBS
We've been hearing from some camps, asking about their web-site listing. The web-team is working hard getting every camp name up:
http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/07_camp_vill_number.html
If you don't see your name here, that does not mean you do not exist! We have you in our database if you are receiving these announcements, so worry not -- and your camp's listing should be up shortly.
If you're not listed in the next week or so, contact us at
placement@burningman.com
Also, if your listing needs a correction, let us know.

EARLY ARRIVAL NUMBERS UPDATE
placement@burningman.com
Water being used for misting systems, slip and slides and things that do not involve consumption do not need health department clearance. It is wise to make sure that you have "potable" water and the source is reputable!
Large public pools and showers will not be permitted. Art pieces involving water are not considered showers unless they are labeled such and encourage bathing. If you have questions about this, email us at placement@burningman.com
KITCHENS/ BARS or DRINKS
If you are providing beverages and/or food for your camp and friends, no health permit is needed.
PUBLIC kitchens of any sort need a permit. Remember, Burning Man does not tolerate the sale of anything at the event, including food. We have cultivated a gift economy. If you are caught selling or bartering food like currency the health department will shut you down -- if your neighbors don't get to you first!
If you are giving food to the public you need a permit. Your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS are the only people you can give food to without health department clearance. If you have any questions, please contact us at placement@burningman.com
FRESH SQUEEZED JUICES
If you are giving away freshly-squeezed fruit drinks to anyone other than your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS, you must get a permit.
ICE
Ice is considered food by the health department. Although there should be no permits needed for "free bars" or "barter bars", your ice source must be approved by state health. The easiest way to comply is to purchase your ice from commercial sources in the surrounding towns as you enter our city, or from us at the event. (Money from our ice sales goes directly back to the town of Gerlach as a gift.)
APPLYING
The health department has forms ready to send out to you. It costs about $50.00 to apply for a basic permit. The process is simple and the health department is easy to work with. They are genuinely concerned about the health of our citizens and prevention of food-born epidemics, so it is their duty to inspect food preparation areas. Like the other public safety agencies on the playa, they can issues citations and fines for violations, and/or shut you down for non-compliance.
If you know you need a permit you can call the health department directly at (775) 687-7548 and ask for Richard. Or email him at relloyan@nvhd.state.nv.us . . . or hit this link:
Early Arrival is now Monday August 18 to Sunday 24. There is no separate "weekend arrival" protocol. We will be working from the arrival dates you already entered in your questionnaire. We want to know what "the absolutely necessary" number of bodies are required to set up your camp and their earliest date of arrival. Once approved, (based on the logic of the request- what structures do you have, what really needs to be done, etc.) we will send your Theme Camp main contact the Early Arrival Passes. NO ONE else will be allowed entry in Black Rock City prior to 12:01am 8-25-08. We do not need names, we just need numbers. Yes, life will be easier at the Gate!!
Think about your needs and your numbers. Watch for our Placement Announcements for our process for getting this info in. Yes, we will ask for numbers BEFORE we have completed our final placed approval list in August. Due to the Gods of Time we must be ready to go on our trip even before we know the route. Your patience, attention and understanding is greatly appreciated!

HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Are you planning anything requiring large amounts of water?
Are you hosting a large kitchen?
Are you giving away food?
Are you serving quantities of drinks over ice?
Are you thinking you may need to get a Health Permit?
If so, this is important information to read.
WATER
Burning Man does not provide water for any projects.
You must bring your own.
Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects that entail full body contact or consumption by people must be "potable" and come from state health department approved water sources. If you are bringing in a water truck or are hauling in large amounts of water you should speak to us directly. There are health department regulations that you need to be aware of. Email us at
Nevada State health Division - Temporary Event Information
If you are not COMPLETELY sure about your particular needs, we strongly advise you to contact us before calling them. They need about 4 weeks to process your permit so don't leave this to the last minute. Contact us or them soon!
This year we will be giving the health department a list of the permitted camps with their BRC addresses so the officials can find you easier for inspections. Make sure we know you are going for a permit so we can add you to our list!
Please pass this information to who ever it concerns in your camp.
GENERAL HEALTH & SAFETY
Check out our page on health related issues. There are all kinds of interesting topics covered, from pregnancy to rebar safety, first-aid kits, fuel storage, etc.

ICE SALES
This message is related to the above topic, as ice is a necessary item for keeping food from spoiling (and drinks cold!) while out in the desert.
Ice will again be available at Arctica in Center Camp and in the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas. Last year's three-location inauguration was mostly successful: even if one location ran out, you could usually count on another one to be stocked up. Our goal this year is to have no shortages, nowhere.

STREET NAMES
In our last announcement, we gave you some information on the new layout of Black Rock City for 2008. This included information on the expanded size of the the first inner street, the Esplanade, and the addition of two longer blocks at the back of the city. You also learned about the doubling of Center Camp with a new capacity for larger theme camps, and the repositioning of Medical Stations and Ranger Outposts behind the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas, but still quite visible and accessible on "C" Street.
Placement Project Manager Sweetthang was pushing for transportation to be represented by street names. After all she said, "the railroads and highways really build this country". Well she got her wish, nearly
Here are the street names for this year . . .
The radial-streets are still numbered in the clock formation we are all familiar with. Center Camp at 6:00. Plazas at 9:00, 7:30, 4:30, and 3:30. Camping/placement areas end at 10:00 and 2:00. The Man at the center.
The concentric-streets begin at the Esplanade and thereafter go :
Esplanade
Allanté
Bonneville
Corvair
Dart
Edsel
Fairlane
Gremlin
Hummer
Impala
jeep
K-car
the "ring road" around Center Camp is
"The Wheel"
(I wanted EV1 for E, but as we all know, they killed the electric car!).
Enjoy!
More to come . . .
